The Week of June 25th

First off, NEXT week is the glorious celebration of independance and this year it will mean independence from new comic books as they will be delayed a day. I begged and pleaded to get them on Tuesday or Wednesday, but to no avail. They will be in next Thursday. I love UPS, don’t you?
Secondly, We are getting in a bunch of restocks on some of the best trades of the best books published, including Sandman, Preacher and current titles Fables, Exterminators, The Walking Dead and Ex Machina. So, if you need a good summer read, you might try one.
Thirdly, there are a bunch of noteworthy books out this week. Black Panther #28 ships and for those of you who are big Marvel Zombies fans, this picks up the story right after last year’s mini-series. I will be getting in more copies of Justice League of America #10 this week. There was a very big ending which will impact the entire DC Universe and… anther title. Sorry, I’m not giving away the ending, you have to read it. Jack of Fables #12 ships as well and I wanted to point out this book as one of the finner reads on the shelf. For those of you who read Fables, you all ready know how great Bill Willingham’s writting is, but for the rest of you, this is a great time to start. Both books are absolute MUST reads.
Finally, I want to point out that X-Men #200 is also shipping. This makes me a bit nostolgic. I remember when issue one shipped. I was in high school and thought it was the best, most amazing, all right I was young and dumb, but still, not a lot of books hit the big two-oh-oh anymore and I thought I would point it out. It will, of course, be shipping with an amazing (I’m not being sarcastic this time) Selvestri gate fold cover. Even if you aren’t buying it, you may want to take a look at it when you stop in. It’s pretty nice.

The Week of June 18th

If you haven’t you should check out all the comic news from the conventions this weekend.  Holy Cats!  Between Hero and Philly, it was a busy weekend.  Newsarama.com has a good breakdown.
You might have been out to see FF2.  Yeah… hope you enjoyed it.  I’m a little behind, I NEED to catch up.  I haven’t seen Spiderman 3 yet or Pirates 5 or Die Hard 8 or… Sorry, my sarcasm was creeping out like a partially dismembered zombie.  Not quite subtle, but still dangerous.
Speaking of movies, friend and customer Don sent me a link to some interesting Marvel Movie news:

Not sure how I feel about that…
And lastly, I hate to keep bringing up really main stream comics as the “hot thing of the week,” but lately that’s all I’ve got.  If you do go and check out the con news from this weekend, you might want to take a gander at the cover to Flash #13.  I guess it will be an unlucky number for young mister Allen.  Supposedly, the book is cancelled after this issue.  Thing is DC has been soliciting the next two issues as a way to garner secrecy.  Now it seems those issues are out and in will be the restarting of the series where it left off, issue 230.  Mark Waid, who had a great run on the book back in the early nineties, is set to take on the writing chores.  The book has been very bad since it was restarted and sales, at least at Cup, have dropped nearly in half.  If you are reading Countdown or the Current JSA/JLA crossover, I know this is tying in.  Being a long time fan of The Flash, I’m  certainly happy to see they aren’t going to just let the character languish.  If you need another book, this may be one to give a try.

The Week of June 11th

I want to take a couple minutes to point out a book or two that is shipping this week.
Something big is happening in New Avengers #31.  I don’t know what that big thing is and Marvel has been very secretive about it, but it’s supposed to rival anything else that is happening in comics this year.  Now, that means it’s as big as say, the death of Captain America or the other big book that is hitting shelves this week, World War Hulk?
I’ve read Hulk since I was but a wee tyke.  I’ve always liked a smart Hulk, but also love a smashing good time.   So, what would happen if Hulk took on… everyone?  Any of us who have read his book for a long time know he can take them and there are a lot of “heroes” in the Marvel Universe right now that are in need of a good beat down.
So, whatever happens in New Avengers #31 and the Smash-tacular-ness of World War Hulk it looks to be a good week for the True Believers of Marvel.
I’m also going to give a shout out to my boys the Porters.  These two DC Zombies have been giving me a hard time for not reading 52 over the last year.  They explained the end to me and told me to just give Countdown a try.  So I did.   I got a good beer and this last weekend sat down and read the last five weeks worth and you know what?  I liked it.  Actually, it reminded me of DC pre-Y2K.  If you remember the darkening of DC came around the arrival of their new Editor in Chief, Dan Didio.  This is not the place for me to bash him and his ideas.  He is not solely to blame for the bad turn DC has taken over the last three to five years.  However, the amazing achievement to put out 52 weekly issues in today’s nothing-ships-on-time schedule was a great feat, but I couldn’t get into it.  I tried a couple times and gave up.  I think I’m going to stick with this Countdown though.  It reminds me of the old days and we are all in need of that.  So, if you are in for the financial commitment of 50 some odd issues, this might be a book to give a try.

The week of June 4th

I’m going to continue what I started last week and recomend a couple of good trades for your summer reading.
First off is Mouse Guard, written and drawn by Dave Petterson from Archadia Press.  This is probably the finest all round, all ages book put out since the shop opened five years ago.  It tells the story of a group of mice that serve the mice towns and villages of thier land.  In the story they are met with a growing mystery group plotting a coup on the existing mouse government.  Richly illustrated and finely written, it is a book that can be read and enjoyed by all ages.  Currently avalible in Hardcover only.
Secondly, we have gotten in Top Ten, volumes 1 and 2.  For the longest time we could only get volume two, but DC has recently gone back to press.  Top Ten is an NYPD Blue for superheroes set in a world populated only by superheroes.  Written by Allan Moore and illustrated by Gene Ha and Zander Cannon, this is some of their best work.  However, you will want to set aside a good chunck of time to read it.  The art is so detailed you will spend hours looking for all the superhero and pop culture in jokes set into the backgrounds of nearly every panel.
Okay, enough recomendations… now for the sales pitch.  One more week left on the big super huge trade paperback sale.  Stop in and help me move some of our trade stock.
