The Week of September 24th

Go grab an issue of Juice (I can’t believe I typed those words.) On the cover is our main man Chuck Grigsby, article on the Reverend inside.
One big huge recommendation this week. If you didn’t pick up The Umbrella Academy last week, you should. Great book in the goofy, yet serious style of Hellboy. It’s written by Gerard Way and art by Gabriel Ba. I think it would appeal to the mainstream crowd, but all of you fringe “I hate superhero book people” (I’m not mocking, I love you all equally the same) would LOVE it. It is about a group of kids that are collected/adopted by an eccentric old man and turned into heroes. The first issue is one of their adventures and then cuts to “modern” day. The art is fantastic. Ba has a style similar, but not copying Mike Mignola. I highly recommend it.

I’m also going to point out JLA/Hitman.  Written by Garth Ennis, art by John McCrea.  If you read Hitman when it was out, you need to pick this book up.  It mocks the JLA and hero books at every turn, with Ennis’s biting wit.  It also has editor notes.  You know, the marks of a bygone era, the little notations that said stuff like “as seen in Hitman #14.”  It’s nice to see them used again.  I’ve talked with DC and if this book does well enough, we should see all the Hitman trades finally released.  It’s been some time since the book finished, but we can all remember one of those good ’90′s books again.

Sorry, that’s it for this week. I’m swamped with end of the month orders. That reminds me there’s a new Diamond Previews out tomorrow. Stop in get a coffee and take a look at Diamond’s Yellow Pages of potential future sales.

The Week of September 17th

Here are a couple of pics of Chuck “The Godson” Grigsby” beating the hell out of people a little over a week ago. Chuck is a long time customer and holds not one but now TWO Light Heavy Weight Mixed Martial Arts Championship Belts now and is the shops own personal superhero.

Zombiefest Four is on. I have a few more details for you this week. As I said before we will be out at the State Fair Grounds and in conjunction with the Mini-con (put on by the Iowa Comic Book Club) on October 27th. The zombies will start wandering about after the con ends, around 4:00, but the con starts up around 9:00am. We also know two of the three movies we will show; Fido and Flight of the Living Dead (both are new films released this year and both are supposed to be very good.) There will be fun, games and zombies and really, if used correctly, zombies can be a source for both fun and games.
Speaking of cons, The Minnesota Fall Con is only a few weeks away, October 6-7. This year’s guest main guests are writer Kurt Busiek, of Astro City and practicly every other hero at one time or another, artists Gene Ha, Pat Gleason, Josh Howard, Doug Mahnke, Angel Medina, Mike Oeming and Steve Rude. If you want more information stop in the shop. We have flyers available or go here: www.mncba.com/Fallcon/Index. This is a really great con and if you have the day to blow, you could do alot worse.
Also, the Mo-Kan Comic Convention is September 29-30 in Kansas City. I, personally have not been to this con before, but have been told it is decent little convention. This year’s guests include Michael Golden, who has is an art god and has worked on nearly everything and Clayton Crain, who most recently has been working on Sensational Spider-man. For more information you can check out their website here: http://mo-kancomicsconspiracy.com/

The Week of September 10th

First off, this Wednesday’s issue of Thor is awesome. I know, I’ve harped on this book before, but it’s freak’n good. Issue three has Thor vs Iron Man and the developing plot of the returning Asgard. I have a few for the shelf and will have more in next week. The thing is, this book is selling more now then at issue one, so if you want it I’d get it on your list.

THOR #3
Fables and Jack of Fables ships this week too. If you are not reading these books, I ask, WHY ARE YOU READING COMICS? They are two of the best comics that have ever been put on selves, READ THEM!

FABLES #66 (MR)

and… another issue of The Walking Dead? I have to say if you are going to have a weekly book, it should include zombies and not suck. The Walking Dead has been a good soap opera lately. Not a huge amount of action, but that is coming. They have been building towards some big things that are yet to come. The covers for issues 44-48 have been shown in the back of Invincible and it doesn’t look good for our heroes.

WALKING DEAD #42 (MR)
Speaking of Zombies… (and if you are smart, you speak of them often. For it is not if, but when the zombies will rise.)
Zombiefest will take place on October 27th at the Iowa State Fair Grounds in the Walnut building. It will take place as part of the Mini-Con. The Con will start at 9am and go until 4pm, with The fest taking place after. I will have more info next week.
Also taking place next week…
There’s a discussion at the Des Moines Public Library about one of the first graphic novels, A Contact With God, by Will Eisner. The discussion group will be from 6:30 to 7:45, Tuesday, September 18th. However, you need to preregister with the library. A Contract With God is a great read and an intricate part of the history of comics, by the great Will Eisner.

WILL EISNERS CONTRACT WITH GOD AND OTHER TENEMENT STORIES SC
and of great feats and great people…
…the holder of another Light Heavy Weight Title belt, Chuck “the Godson” Grigsby. Chuck beat two fighters in Council Bluffs last Friday to take that areas vacant LHW title. Chuck mentioned to me he got kicked in the face by the first fighter and it just made him mad and fired him up more. He also said the first fight lasted a little over ninety seconds and the second, less then a minute. Here’s to you, oh destroyer of mere mortals, you are a hell of a guy and certainly a guy I want on my side!

The Week of September 3rd

COMICS ARE DELAYED A DAY THIS WEEK AND WILL BE IN ON THURSDAY.
Some brief comic shop news.
The Boys is our top selling book!  Looking at strictly regular selling books not influenced by crossovers or gimmicks it took the top spot away from New Avengers last week when I cut down the current NA order.  This is a little shocking, however, in a good way.  I like seeing a book outside the main two hold this shop honor.  I think it says a few things too.  Our customers are smarter then the average comic shops.  Our customers like good art (Derrik Robertson) and good writing (Garth Ennis.)  Thanks guys and even more shockingly, girls.
Just want to point out that the new previews came out last week.  I have had a few people ask where I’ve gotten that great t-shirt or cool action figure or dumb trinkety thing, well, it all comes from the mammoth order form that is previews.  If you have a few extra minutes you might take a chance to look through it.  If you find something you like, put in an order and I’ll throw it in your box when it comes in.  It’s that easy.
And finally, I quick review of a crossover that’s been pretty good so far.  The Green Lantern/Sinestro Corp War has been a lot of fun.  It reminds me of old school Marvel crossovers where a whole bunch of $hit gets messed up.  your pretty sure things will be all right in the end, but in the meantime things are going to look pretty grave for our heroes.  I have been selling out of the regular books, but will be getting first through fourth printings of nearly all of the issues in again soon.  Just let me know if you want any tossed into your box for safe keeping.
