Monthly Archive for October, 2007

The Week of October 29th

Long month, so this will be short today.
Hope those of you who made it out to Minicon and Zombiefest last weekend enjoyed yourself.  It was a good time, I think, for those who made it.  Next year?  Maybe, we’ll see.  If you didn’t make it, go rent the film Fido.  It may very well be the best Zombie movie ever made.  Absolutely hilarious.
I was e-mailed a few good links about upcoming comic book movie news from customer and friend, Don.  The first is about a Green Lantern movie.  I don’t know, this would seem like a slam dunk, but  I don’t know.  There have been a lot of crappy/flashy superhero movies lately.  Here’s the article:

And another one on Hellboy and The Golden Army.  This will be better then Green Lantern, guaranteed:

A reminder on hockey tickets.  You can join me for an Iowa Stars game at Wells Fargo on Friday, November 16th for the low, low price of only $9.50 per ticket.  I’m teaming up with Alien Hockey (Des Moines’s top supplier of hockey equipment) are teaming up for this event.  If you are interested, please let me know and I’ll get money from you and then tickets to you.

The Week of October 22nd

It’s that time again.
ZOMBIEFEST is here and though it may be a little later then what you have been used to in time’s past, there is a little more to it this year.

Here are the details:
Saturday, October 27 at the Walnut Building on the Iowa State Fair Grounds.
MINICON, put on by the Iowa Comic Book Club, starts at
9:00am. Dealers, Artists and Writers from around the Midwest there to Sell, Sketch and Sign. Goes all afternoon. $3.00 entrance fee. Kids, dress up and get prizes!

ZOMBIEFEST starts at 4:30pm. Three horror-filled features; Fido, Flight of the Living Dead and 28 Weeks Later (though they aren’t really zombies – ‘cause they run. Duh!) Trivia and Costume Contest, Movies and Fun. No entrance fee. Zombies don’t want your cash, only your brains.
Notes: If you are coming for Z-Fest, bring a chair or you are sitting on the floor. It is concrete and will hurt your bum.
We will have a concession stand at the con and for the fest.

Learn about the Importance of Spiderman:
I’m speaking at the North Side Public Library (3516 5th Ave) at 4:00 on Tuesday (today) October 23. I’m speaking on the Importance of Spiderman and though it may be in conjunction with teen read week, all ages can get something out of it.

A couple books of note:
She-Hulk #22 hits stands this week.

SHE-HULK 2 #22

It’s Peter David’s first issue and it’s good. I am more then a little biased here, as I read his long run on Hulk years ago and am really digging on what he’s done with both of his runs on X-Factor. You might want to give this a shot if you are not all ready reading it.

CRAWL SPACE XXXOMBIES #1

Crawl Space XXXombies is Tony Moore’s latest foray into the land of the living dead. He and Rick Remender (Fear Agent) are putting together a story centered around the exploits of a porn set’s cast/crew and a zombie apocalypse. Come on, are you telling me that isn’t enough to get you to buy this book? Tony is drawing Zombies again, pick it up.

WALKING DEAD #43 (MR)

Speaking of Zombies… The Walking Dead’s new issue (#43) is out this week as well. I’m also getting in a bunch of copies of the trades, so if you haven’t read it, get cracking.

WORLD WAR Z ORAL HISTORY OF ZOMBIE WAR HC (C: 0-1-2)

AND World War Z will be out in soft cover. This is the best zombie anything ever put out, movie, book or comic. If you haven’t read it, you have no excuse, except that maybe you can’t read books without pictures. I challenge you.

And finally, Hockey

You may or may not know this about me, but I am a HUGE hockey fan. Through the league I play in and Alien Hockey (the source for all your hockey needs – check them out at www.Alienhockey.com), there is an opportunity for you to go to an Iowa Stars game on Friday, November 16 at the incredibly low price of only $9.50 per ticket. With the ticket you get a soda, a hotdog and a bag of chips. This is a promotion the Stars are running and our league needs to sell a certain number of tickets to get an amount of ice time after the game. If you are interested, drop me a reply and I’ll converse with you. We are also still looking for a few new people to join our novice D league. This league is designed for beginners. If you would like more info, talk to me or contact Alien Hockey. You could be on the official Cup o’ Kryptonite Hockey Team.

The Week of October 15th

Sorry everyone, I’ve just been very busy and haven’t had the ability to write or comment much of late. Things aren’t much better, but I have a few little bits for you this week.
First off, Zombiefest 2007 is less then two weeks away. All reminder stuff here, but it will be at the Iowa State Fair Grounds and in conjunction with The Mini-Con, which is put on by the Iowa Comic Book Club. Both events are October 27th, with the con starting at 9am and lasting until 4pm. There will be dealers and guests from around the Midwest and admittance to the con is only $3.00. Z-fest will take place after that with the customary costume contests, games and prizes. We will watch three “fabulous” films this year, Fido and Flight of the Living Dead being two of them. The third film… hmm, maybe I’ve decided and maybe I haven’t. If you need more info come into the shop and talk to me.
Next on my agenda today.

The image “http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1f/Blood_cover.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

A couple good guys from the 515 (that’s area code speak) have gone and done a silly thing, they have gotten into this comic book industry. Many months back I mentioned Antidote Comics’s launch party. Now, we have the books in the shop. Jonah Hardenbrook, Anthony Lucia and Chris Pruisner have put together a hell of a good book and they are only just getting started, as they have several other great ideas and comics up their sleeves. Blood’s Own is their first book and issue one is available now. The three of them will be at Minicon/Zombiefest and in later in the year for a full on signing. When you stop in this week, you should pick up a copy and support local comic creators, who are a genuinely good group of guys.
and finally today… from local quality to big business crap.
They, being the hacks at Marvel, have released images of the “new” Captain America.

No word on who it is or what the circumstances are behind this “new” cap, but it looks like crap. I have probably mentioned the fact that I am a huge Captain America fan and have been reading him on again/off again for nearly thirty years. I have read good stories with bad art, bad stories with bad art (then dropped the book only to pick it up again later) and currently, great stories with great art.
Ed Brubaker is writing the best mainstream superhero book I’ve read in, well, maybe ever. Steve Epting is putting down fabulous art and getting very little notice for it.

Cap went and got himself killed a few months back, I’m sure you heard about this. Now, don’t think I’m naive enough to think they would “leave him dead” or not put someone in the suit. I get it, but what they are doing is redesigning it and having Alex Ross do the redesign. I personally feel he’s over rated. A good and talented artist who would probably make for a cool guy to sit and have a cup of joe with and talk about old comics or Flash Gordon, but still over rated when it comes to his art. In my opinion, John Cassiday is a better artist… oh, right, he sort-of did a redesign a few years ago and it didn’t look like ass.

AND… the thing is Alex Ross shouldn’t be doing a redesign. I freaking hate it when comic companies bring someone who doesn’t and hasn’t worked on a book to redesign the character. Epting’s monthly work rivals anyone at Marvel or DC and he isn’t late either.
This may all sound like rambling nonsense, especially if you haven’t seen the ass-y new costume, and it probably is. So, I have links for you. This will take you to interviews and pics of the new costume:

This will take you to a slideshow of Cap through the ages of costume redesigns (All bad):

I told you I was really bottling us a good rant, and I have a feeling this one hasn’t even started. At least the story and art will continue to be good. I have faith in Brubaker, just not Marvel.

The Weeks of October 1st and 8th

Sorry for the lack of ranting.  A really good one is building against DC, but you will have to wait.  Things have been to busy with cons and the whathaveyou.  More will come, just be patient.  Blah, Blah, Blah… reports of my death and all that.
