The Week of November 24th

Note on shipping for this and next week.  Everything is as they should be this week.  Books will be in on Wednesday and on the shelf around 11.  We will be closed on Thursday as we plan on stuffing our faces and then not being able to move.
NEXT WEEK however, Diamond has delayed the shipment by a day.  I do not remember this from year’s past and have not gotten an acceptable response on this issue.  None the less, books will be in on Thursday next week.  Boo!
Looking ahead to X-mas (a celebration of the life of Professor X, right?) the week of Christmas books are on time on Wednesday the 24th, but delayed the week after not one day but two, shipping on Friday, January 2nd, 2009.  I have all this up on the website too.

If you (and, if you have any, your kids) are looking for something to do a week from Saturday (December 6th), you might consider A Very Geeky Christmas here at Cup o’ Kryptonite.  We will have plenty of events designed for kids both old and young, starting at 11:00am.  Everything that will take place is structured around supporting three different, but equally important, charities.
We will be a drop off site all day for Toys for Tots and donations will get you chances to win prizes.  We will be a place to have your gift wrapping finished with a donation to Animal Life Line (from 11am to 6pm) and there will be a geek boutique to benefit Iowa Public Television.
Some of the other events during the day will include:
Children’s Christmas Crafts: Christmas Card & Ornament Making and Letters to Santa, 11am-5pm.
Quick and easy ideas for displaying your Christmas village: 1-1:30.
Holiday Story Time with Our Pal Al from Waldenbooks: 3:30-4:30.
Appearances by characters from Star Wars: Darth Vader and The Central Garrison of the 501st Legion: Noon-4:00pm.
Appearance by Santa: 3-5:00pm.
Holiday Family Movie Night: 5:30-9:00pm.  Among the films we plan to show are Emit Otter’s Jug Band Christmas and Charlie Brown’s Christmas
There will also be door prizes for kids all day.
This is the type of event that we at Cup o’ Kryptonite feel is why businesses exist, to give something back to the community.  I am a very big animal lover and Animal Life Line is one of my (and Cathy’s, who is putting the event on) favorite charities.  The day is not a success if we make money.  It’s a success if the charities make money.  So, please, consider coming down and hanging out for a little bit, sharing some holiday spirit and maybe you can ask Santa (who I’ve known all my life) for something really nice for Christmas.

Now on to the comic portion of our presentation…

I don’t know if you had heard, but when Thor issue 12 hits it will be Thor #600.  You can guess how much this irritates a comic purist like me.  I’ve seen some of the David Aja (Iron Fist) art and it looks awesome.  Like want to get tattoos of it awesome and the story he is drawing is written by Stan the Man.  BUT still, do you have to redo the numbering.  Grrr, Marvel…

Looks like James Robinson is not done at DC.  Rich Johnston is reporting on his Lying in the Gutters post this week that he is still with the company.  Doesn’t change the fact Editor in Chief Dan Didio needs to be fired.  We (Curt, Kyle and myself) have considered putting together a petition to have him fired, but as Johnston states in his post this week, it probably won’t do any good.  Grrr, DC…

I wanted to point out two books that are shipping this week, first, The Umbrella Academy: Dallas.  This is the follow up to the widely popular and critically acclaimed Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba book from earlier this year.  I have read very little in the last couple years that I would put in the same category as this book.  It’s truly one of the best books I’ve ever read, both art and writing wise.  Grant Morrison described the first series as “The X-Men for cool people.”  Now the second series is here and I don’t know how it can be as good as the first, but I will say this much, it is most certainly at the very top of my read pile Wednesday night.  I am also getting in an expensive ($80) oversized hardcover in as well.  I believe it is very limited in it’s production run and one is going into my collection.  If you want it I put it on a first come (or contact) first served basis.  I will also have more copies of the trade of the first series in as well.  Oh, it’s so good.  Dark Horse, thank you.

And it’s the final chapter of Batman RIP…  We shall have to see.  At least I’m 99% chance sure Mephisto will not show up to offer a “way out.”  I guess that’s a good thing.

The Week of November 17

I want to point out if you haven’t had a chance to look at and order from the November Previews, you will need to get it in as soon as possible.  I’m hoping to get most of or all of the order done this coming weekend.
The shop will be closing a little early on Saturday evening.  It is being rented out for a private party starting at 8:00.  Just a heads up.
First little tid-bit… did anyone notice Kenneth Branagh has been named to direct the Thor feature film?  Holy Cats!  He’s into like Hamlet and Shakespeare and sh..stuff.  He directed one of my favorite films, Dead Again.  You know the with the scissors being “for you!”  So, one of England’s best directors (and actors for that matter) is going to polish up Thor’s hammer.  Is this going to be good or something?  I might see a superhero movie.
Speaking of superhero movies… the new news about the Watchmen movie.  Squid anyone?  I guess the film might be squid less.  As my friend Dan said, “WHAT!?!   Seriously!  I don’t think I’ll be seeing it.”
Want to read more about this topic and how Dan Didio might have alienated Grant Morrison and James Robinson from working with DC again.  Head over to this week’s Lying in the Gutters at Comic Book Resources at www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=18852 I don’t see how DC can continue with this man at the helm.  As a business man who is trying to make money off books that this person controls, DC needs to fire him.  Seriously, how do you piss off Grant Morrison or James Robinson?  This should be the easiest job in the world.  You tell them they are awesome and let them write what and how they want too.

One last thing…  We are currently planning a great Saturday afternoon Christmas event called A Very Geeky Christmas.  It’s Saturday, December 6th from 11am on into the evening.  The event will benefit Animal Life Line, Iowa Public Television and Toys for Tots.  Among the many events the day will include are gift wrapping, holiday story time, holiday movies, kids holiday craft time, letters to Santa and visits by Darth Vader, Storm trooper and their friend Old Saint Nick.  I’ll have more info over the next two weeks, but this should be a great event to benefit some fantastic charities.
