The Week of August 2nd

I hate technology.  Duh, I own a store that sells paper, but it is true, I hate it.  This is not just because I’ve seen Terminator and know what we are getting ourselves into, but because simplicity is a good thing and technology only makes lives more complicated, connected and inevitably terrifying.

That bit of “sage” advice can go to hell.  I’ve been without my laptop for nearly a week and I’m losing my mind.  I contracted a virus that disabled my ability to connect with the internet a couple weeks ago and have been limping around since.  I finally turned the damn thing over to my buddy Aaron Stack and have been without all weekend.

Amazingly, my wife has not killed me with my constant asking to use hers or check the White Sox score.  So, Thor bless her.

Thor can also bless Aaron for dealing with this fleshy one.

Why do I tell you this?  Because, I’m sure I’ve messed up some notations in the hold lists over the last couple weeks.  Sorry.

Just remember, it is NOT zombies we need to worry about.

Remember CrossGen?…

Do you remember when there was a lot more variety on your shop’s comic racks?  Ah, the early 2000’s and the days of CrossGen, publishers of something for EVERYBODY.  Seriously, they had something for every taste in the book.  Pirates, horror, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Sherlock Homes type detective stories, space opera and Kung-fu, I miss CrossGen.

OH, but looks like nothing truly stays dead in comics.  Lost in the announcements of multi-media lime green event driven b.s. was a small single screen projected image at Joe Quesada’s panel about Marvel publishing some CrossGen books.

Quesada said, “It just offers us a wider variety of stories to tell than just the normal Marvel Universe kind of stories.  I think with the CrossGen stuff you’re going to see us attempt a little more genre publishing, which I think is much-needed in our imprint.”  Joe, you could not be more right on, but I would add that this goes for the industry as well.

Every company goes their own way and usually emphasizes its strengths.  That is just smart publishing.  Problems arise when 75% of the industry (two companies) publish nearly 80 to 85% superheroes.  The whole of literature is not 75% detective stories and comics do not need to be 75% superheroes.

Marvel, being even more centered on long underwear and capes then even DC thanks to Vertigo, is in sore need of a little diversity.  They have done a great job with some of their novel adaption’s and slightly broader Max books, but, yeah… come on, it is really X-spidey-Avenger driven.

Funny thing about this is that Marvel and DC acted so badly towards what CrossGen was trying to do back nearly a decade ago and now we find the big boy getting this publishing shot in the arm thanks to it’s being purchased by Disney.  Back in 2004, Disney bought the rights to the CrossGen catalogue for the rights to Abadazad.

Nothing else was mentioned as to specifics on what would be published, revived, continued or restarted, but that there would be CrossGen stuff published.

This is not something you are here from me very often about a major comic book company, but good job.  This is fantastic news and everyone from the Disney execs who pushed this through to Editor in Chief Joey Q deserves major praise for it.

More Frank Miller… what is the world coming too?…

Another lost tid bit last week was Frank Miller announcing next year will see the publication of the Holy Terror/Batman vs. Al Queda book.  However, it will NOT have Batman in it now.  The main character will be called The Fixer and he will still be fighting terrorists who have done something to his city or state or whatever.  Supposedly, the book is near completion and will be published next year in a similar format 300 was originally published (comic format that ran across the interior gutters – if you don’t understand, open up your 300 hard cover and take a look at the pages.  One page was two pages in a comic book.  Man that was a good read and was  when it came out!)

And speaking of 300… Rumor has been running, with a Xerxes print being offered by Dark Horse, that there may be some kind of prequel in the works at Dark Horse connected with 300.  Multiple reports are saying script pages are done and work has ready to begin on pages.  Story would center around Xerxes, the Greek Warlord Thermistocles and taking place just after the Battle of Marathon and spanning many years, rather than just a few days.  SWEET!

All this made me wonder, so…. What is the problem with All Star Batman and Robin?  YO, Jim Lee… get to work, dude!

Tickets Available for this Friday’s Wrestling!!..

3XWrestling at the Des Moines Social Club this Friday, Friday, Friday!!  We have presale tickets available, like usual, and like usual the card looks fantastic.

It is the Annual King of Des Moines Tournament.  This event sees a bracketed system to declare the new king and usually results in some great new feuds.  This year’s first round matches include Mark Sterling vs. Gentleman’s Club Member “Delicious” Devin Carter, GC Member Brian Ash vs. Maddog McDowell, “Unbreakable” Zach Thompson vs. “the Popular” Nate Bash and “the Rebel” Jeremy Wyatt vs. “The Professional” Ben Sailer.

Two of these wrestlers will take to the mat three times in the evening and you can say all you want about pro-wrestling being fake, but you would be wrong.  Scripted yes, fake, far from it.  There is a BIG difference.  Athletes come in many shapes and forms.  Athletics does too.  Alright, off the soap box and back to the card…

There are two more major matches on the docket Friday, both Championship bouts.  The 3XWrestling Heavy Weight Championship is on the line as Rory Fox takes on “Laotion Sensation” Ricky Kwong.  Kwong has been impressing of late, but it will be a major feet to wrest the title away from the newly minted champion.

Also, “The Rockstar” Jimmy Rockwell will again be putting a title, he has two now, up against a gaggle of competition.   The 3X Pure Wrestling Championship is up against five people!  Odds don’t look good for The Rockstar this month.

So, there is your card.  Hope to see you out on Friday.  I’ll be there, you should come along too.
