Geeky Christmas…

This Saturday, December 4th from 11am to 4pm

This coming Saturday is Geeky Christmas, our one day we try to give back as much as we can to our community.  A charity benefit for Animal Life Line of Iowa, Toys for Tots and Iowa Public Television.  Geeky Christmas is the brain child of long time customer and all round nicest person Kathy Scott.

Last year we were able to smash the previous year’s total of giving like the Hulk crushing a puny super villain (like Man-beast.)  This year, I would hope to take it up a step and make it more like Galactus sized beat down, but I can’t do that alone.  I don’t ask for help and support that often, this is one of those times.

Here are just some of the things we will be doing on Saturday:

A Needs Drive (like we did with our X-mas in July event) for Animal Life Line of Iowa, the no kill animal rehabilitation shelter here on the South Side.  The needs are as good as a financial donation, everything given is money saved that can go towards the treatment of the special needs animals awaiting adoption.

Just some of the needs include:

Liquid Laundry Soap – Dish Soap – Bleach – Clorox Anywhere Spray Cleaner – Tall Kitchen Garbage Bags – Lawn and Leaf Size Garbage Bags – Zip Loc Storage Bags – Gallon Size Kleenex Tissues – Endust Spray – Air Wick Fresh Matic Ultra Refills – Dobie Scrubbers – Bottle brushes – Copy Machine Paper – Postage Stamps – #10 Envelopes

A full list can be found on their website at: www.animal-lifeline.com/WISHLISTAugust2010.pdf

The Geek Boutique to raise money for Iowa Public Television.  A place to find fantastic, and odd, gifts for that geek on your holiday gift list.  Every year I find some great stuff for my best friends kids, bailing me out of having to step foot into a department store.  AND all the proceeds go to charity.

The shop will also become a Toys for Tots drop off site for several weeks.  Bring in those unwrapped toys for needy kids, and we will get them to the Marines who do such a fine job year in and year out with this great charity.

Gift Baskets for those who give to win.  You donate, you get a ticket.  We draw your ticket, you win the basket.  These are always some very nice winnings that can be turned straight into gifts… or enjoyed on their own by the winner.

Gift wrapping for donation.  If you are like me and can’t wrap a gift to save your life, but your mom won’t let you put gifts under the tree at home in the plastic bag it came in… well, Kathy is here for you.  Bring in your gifts and for a free will donation they will be wrapped for you.  This saves me every year and it can save you too.  (Don’t have gifts the first week of December, we will do another special one day wrapping session on December 18th.)

There will also be appearances by the 501st and Mandalorian Star Wars troops as well as Spider-man, kids crafts, a not quite ready for prime time skinny Santa is sure to drop by and conduct some story time, drink specials and who knows what else.

When we had our X-Mas in July event and just did a Needs Drive for Animal Life Line, I was blown away by the support and generosity that was shown.   I really hope the same can be said this year for Geeky Christmas.  Please take a little time on Saturday and help us help the community at large.

3XWrestling…

This Wednesday, December 1st, Pre-Event Party at Cup o’ K from 6 to 8.

Join us for wrestling shenanigans and  comic madness!

In my continued effort to get you all into pro-wrestling, I am opening my doors to the big boys and girls of 3XWrestling and giving you the opportunity to meet the stars before you see them in the ring.

We’ll have Free Beer for the early arrivals, Drink Specials and Door Prizes.  Several of the stars of 3XW will be on hand for you to meet, greet and ask questions of.  It also provides a great opportunity for you to pick up last minute pre-sale discounted tickets.

The Outside the Ring crew will be at the shop for the contract signing for the rematch of Rockwell vs. Kwong.  You know where the camera’s go chaos follows!

This Friday, December 3rd, Holiday Havoc 2.

And then a great set of matches is on tap at the Des Moines Social Club Friday.

As mentioned above, “The Rockstar” Jimmy Rockwell gets another shot at reclaiming his title against The Laotian Sensation, Ricky Kwong.

A big six man tag match featuring Zach Thompson and the Horn Dogs versus Ryan Slade and American Ground and Air.

And what should prove to be an epic confrontation, Champion Rory Fox puts his title on the line against the biggest and meanest man in 3X, Brian Ash.  Is it time for the title to head back to the Gentleman’s Club?

Tag Champs Carter and Casanova, as well as the Rebel Jeremy Wyatt and Gage Octane are also scheduled to compete.

Doors open at 7:00, Matches start at 7:30.

Pre-sale tickets, if purchased at The Cup are only $12 for adults and $6 for kids.

Ronnie’s Reviews…

Detective Comics #871 Scott Snyder & Jock/Francesco Francavilla
Killer Croc by Jock!  Sort of.
Scott Snyder and Jock’s debut issue is the kind of story that modern era Detective Comics is known for, even if it has not been typical in recent years. The dark whodunit story, investigations of crooked cops and crazy rich people, classic rogues gallery, etc.  You know, the stuff we hard core bat-fans love.
The writing, by American Vampire scribe Scott Snyder, gets inside Dick Grayson’s head very well, and focuses on his relationship with Commissioner Gordon as the Gotham Batman.  It seamlessly places itself inside of Grant Morrison’s new Bat-universe without diluting its own story told in its own style, unlike say, Red Robin.  The story opens with a bullying incident at a school that goes horribly wrong.  Nothing creepier than little kids doing very bad things.  So far so good.  Plus a nice shout out to Gotham Central, a sorely missed title.
The art is fantastic. Jock is currently known for his awesome iconic covers of many Vertigo books, so his return to interior art (minus a few mini-series, it has been awhile since the Losers) was highly anticipated by myself.  It should fit Gotham well with all the shady characters, dark alleys and ten guns per square foot.  I was rooting for him to do an arc on Batman & Robin, but I believe this is gonna be a more perfect fit.
And then there is the Commissioner Gordon backup by Snyder and the fantastic Francesco Francavilla.  This guy’s art is just great.  It’s got a bit of noir mixed with old Frank Miller and lots of saturated color.  I have seen some of his concert fliers in the past and an issue of Scalped, and I hope to see a lot more in the “funny” books.  This story looks like we might dig around in Jim’s closet.  There have been a lot of open ended questions about the Commissioner’s past throughout the years, and this might shed some light on his son.  Awesome.  This feels less like a backup, and more like a ‘meanwhile’ sidebar.  There is no jarring change between the two stories.
This promises to be a very, very good return to form for Detective Comics.
5 Stars

DMZ #59 Brian Wood & David Lapham
I believe this one-shot is the beginning of the endgame.  I don’t know how many issues are left, but it feels that we are going to start seeing some resolution to the story.  David Lapham did a great job on his guest art, and the writing is as engaging as always.  Excellent issue in an excellent series.
4.5 Stars.

Scalped #43 Jason Aaron & Jason Latour
This one-shot spotlights a sheriff of a small neighboring town and profiles his attempt at winning admiration from the kids, using his authority position to get whatever he wants from the women, and risking his carefully groomed legendary reputation by facing the real deal.  Not as intense as the just finished arc, but a solid read that could be enjoyed by anyone.  Scalped is consistently the best book out there and one EVERYONE should be reading
5 Stars.

Batman & Robin #17 Paul Cornel & Scott McDaniel
First Post-Morrison issue, and not a bad one at that.  The story is weird, the characters weirder, and Damian is true to form.  McDaniels seems to be making a return to his former Gotham go- to-guy status (after a just finished arc on Detective), which is not a bad thing.  Using Guillem March as the first non-Quietly cover was a great choice too.  Plus one hell of a last page.
4 Stars

(Note – Paul Cornel is also writing Action Comics right now too.  His stories diving into the psyche of Lex Luthor and his search for Black Power Rings are some of the best super “hero” books being published right now and not to be missed.  Action still sits under the radar, but with a landmark issue #900 approaching, it probably won’t for long.)

Week of November 22

***Note on Comic delivery December 2nd…  Next week comics will arrive on Thursday, because… Well, I don’t know why, they just are.  Good news, however, is both weeks of X-mas will have comics arriving on the Wednesday before (Dec. 22nd) and the Wednesday after (Dec. 29th) with no foreseeable delays.

Geeky Christmas is a week and a half away…

December 4th, 11am to 4pm

Every year we have a single day in December when we try to give back as much as we can to our community.  This event is Geeky Christmas and it is a charity benefit for Animal Life Line of Iowa, Toys for Tots and Iowa Public Television.

Last year we were able to smash the previous year’s total of giving like the Hulk crushing a puny super villain (like Man-beast.)  This year, I would hope to take it up a step and make it more like Galactus sized beat down to last year.  It will not be easy, as the numbers are pretty lofty, but with your help it can be done.

This is just some of the things we will have:

3X Holiday Havoc Pre-Party…

December 1st, 6:00 to 8:00pm

Join us for wrestling shenanigans and  comic madness!

In my continued effort to get you all into pro-wrestling, I am opening my doors to the big boys and girls of 3XWrestling.  I’ve noticed more and more of you at 3X events and hopefully you’ve enjoyed them.  I love it so much more than the stuff on TV, now come out and meet the stars before you see them in the ring.

We’ll have Free Beer, Drink Specials and Door Prizes.  Several of the stars of 3XW will be on hand for you to meet, greet and ask questions of.  It also provides a great opportunity for you to pick up last minute pre-sale discounted tickets.

I also have it on good authority that the Outside the Ring crew will be there and where they go, chaos and cameras follow!

Note on hold boxes…

Man I hate writing these.  It always seems like I’m preaching to the choir, that the only people who read this blog and the e-mail are the ones who don’t need to hear this, however… I’ve got to say it anyway.

If you like us and you like buying comics from us, you need to be more cognizant of your box.

Unless you have talked to us, please do not let it build up to the point I need to remind you to come in and buy what is in it.

Please, if you don’t want a comic that is on your hold list, let us know as soon as possible.  We have to buy ALL of these books and THEN sell them to you.  We do have ways to cut down initial orders, but it is a set system, sooner is better.

We do not get to return them and we start in the hole until we make the money back.

What I’m getting at is help us help you, please buy your books, let us know if you don’t want something and stop driving Matt, Curt and Kyle more crazy.  So ends the sermon.  Buy your books.

Interesting Post on Marvel’s Numbers…

Found something on Bleeding Cool I thought I would pass along.  It might explain why certain storytelling has been going in certain ways over the last few years.  Rich Johnston posted numbers he found of print run averages on Marvel Books over close to the last decade.  WOW, some are SAD!!  Johnston theorizes that if total numbers are down (as shown in the numbers in a print run for a book) and in the total number of people buying a comic, then it is the core fan that is actually buying comics – hence, writing for the fan boy.

Interesting thoughts and worth a look.  Draw your own conclusions.

I see why they won’t lower their prices, that is for sure.

Ronnie’s Reviews…

Batman Incorporated #1 Grant Morrison & Yanick Paqutte
This issue allegedly begins the last chapter in Grant Morisson’s Batman saga.  Having greatly enjoyed the sci-fi/dark comedy awesomeness that came before, I opened this issue expecting a new dark story to match Bruce Wayne’s new deadly serious tone.  That is not what I got.
What I did get wasn’t bad, but unexpected.  The story is the first part of a tale of Bruce/Batman and Catwoman going to Japan to meet a vigilante there, and steal a not-quite-what-it-seems diamond.  At first I thought the main players were highly out of character, which included Japan itself.  Everything seemed like a caricature of Japanese pop culture.  I was disappointed and rather irritated by this as I was reading, but then I ‘got the joke’.  I was still nervous that Grant had lost his momentum while I was finishing the issue, but the last page sealed the deal.  The joke was on us.
Not only was Grant making fun of north america’s insular nature, where most of our geographic knowledge comes from pop media, but also our perceived cultural superiority.  And he, being a Scotsman working for american media, probably has a unique view from afar that many of us yanks wouldn’t.  He is exploiting our media shaped ignorance.
Or maybe I am completely wrong.  OR, maybe not.
The art was interesting, but not really my style. I am not too familiar with Paquette, but in this issue he works with strong black lines and each panel has an obvious eye-draw, but the shading and coloring is very cartoony.  It did fit the mood of the story well.  Again, I thought we were gonna have some serious Bruce stories, and some dark art to go with it.  Maybe that will be David Finch’s department with his upcoming series.
I am excited to see Grant’s take on my beloved Catwoman, she has been in desperate need for some good stories, and I don’t remember Grant writing her as of yet.  So far his take has been very Eartha Kitt, all prrs and sexy cat jokes.
After I felt like I got a handle on the point of this issue, I enjoyed it more.  That’s the kind storytelling I love; it’s always more than it seems, you think about it the whole day after you read it and it makes you want to read it again.
5 Stars if I’m right, 2 Stars if I’m not.
Editor’s Note – What Ronnie didn’t mention is The Return.  Here is an odd contrast to Inc.  Different in EVERY single way.  Very dark and lacking of a stand out color palate, the book’s art, by David Finch, has far less hard lines and is, like typical of Finch’s style, much more sketchy than Paquete’s more basic look.

Then there is the writing, also both different in every way.  The Return’s dark and creepy with shadowy villains and Inc’s more, well, I think the art is still distracting me on Inc, but it has a much more campy story telling feel.

Both are fine, both have problems, both have strengths and weeknesses.

You almost wish you could take parts you like from both and make yourself one perfect book.
Quickie:
Hellboy Double Feature of Evil One-Shot Mike Mignola & Ricard Corben
Two stories for less than the price of an Avengers!  When Richard Corben gets a good goofy story, he is the King of Creepy.  More please. 5 Stars.
(Editor’s Note – See what Ronnie wants to say is THIS WAS SO MUCH BETTER THEN THE BAT-BOOKS LAST WEEK!!! But he can’t.  It is okay Ronnie, you can admit that a Hellboy comic is the best thing to come out in some time and you wish you collected only Hellboy rather then just some dark brooding flying mammal.  Double Feature has more creepy and less humor then the Hellboy in Mexico issue that came out back in May.  I don’t know if it is as good as the Eisner winning Crooked Man or really atmospheric Bride of Hell, but it is in the same ball park.  I love Mignola’s art, but you combine his amazing writing with one of the world’s best horror artists in Corben, it is comic perfection.)
Northlanders #34 Brian Wood/Riccardo Burchielli
The final issue of the Metal arc from the DMZ team.  This series is the first time I ever gave a crap about Vikings, and this arc in general taught me a lot while entertaining me well.  Word is that this series is very well researched and accurate.  4 Stars.

Extra Credit-
When I first heard Grant Morrison’s description of Batman Inc., I was horrified (he did mention freakin’ starbucks as part of it!).  The idea of an malevolent corporation has been covered before in mainstream comics, Iron Man comes to mind.  But this has a heavy odor of colonialism.  Bruce Wayne, The World’s Greatest Detective, is going to travel around the world and save it with his local recruited soldiers.  Working under him, wearing his flag, and possibly subject to perks for obedience, punishment for insubordination.
I could be jumping the gun, but there have been numerous stories of Bruce doing this in Gotham City already.  Spoiler, various Robins & Batgirls, Orpheus, etc.  Even Frank Miller took an infamous stab at it in All Star Batman. What makes this different is that many of these “recruits” are products of their unique culture and environment.  They will intimately know how to navigate and react within it.  Will Batman’s one-size-fits-all methodology work everywhere?  Or, is he going to train these folks in his detective/fighting/scaring-the-crap-out-of-everyone skills, and then fund them to take care of business, on their terms.  So are we looking at The Inquisition Bat-Style, or The Peace Corps?
Also, from the point of view of Gotham, if Wayne Industries funds Batman, will that question Batman’s motives?  Is his every action beneficial to his corporate sponsor?  Does Batman come to board meetings to discuss his next targets?  Will Wayne Industries get sued for his actions?  Will Lex Luthor attempt to destroy the company through worldwide boycott by his CEO friends?
Maybe that is Morrison’s master plan, setting up all of this to blowup in Batman’s face.  Make it just another impossible obstacle for Bruce to overcome.
I guess time will tell, and we have heady subversive precedents like The Invisibles to help us guess.  Again, I give Mr. Morrison the benefit of the doubt.  He almost always delivers.

Week of November 15th

Welcome Back, Batman…

First thing today, I want to thank Ernie Chan for stopping by the shop for a few hours on Sunday and doing a little sketching and signing.  I wasn’t able to get out to the I-con this weekend, but was lucky enough to have the comic legend, who helped create the images I know as Conan, in the shop.  Brad Walker was also in on his way to the airport, a great guy there too.

Both of you thanks for coming by and come back again soon.

This Wednesday, November 17th, 5:00 to 8:00pm

Batman is back, lets party.

More so, Batman is back and he is going to start a big benevolent corporation.  This is the next major arc in Grant Morrison’s huge Batman saga he started years ago.  Minus a few speed bumps (and some slow artists) it has really been pretty extraordinary.  What, you need more reasons to have a party?  Well…

There are a slew of great superhero books out this week too.  Of course, the two biggest are Batman, the Return one shot (this is Batman’s actual return to the DC universe, even though he kind of has already been back in like 12 other issues – shut up Matt!!) and the new ongoing Batman, Inc.  There are a couple other bat-books, Batman #704, Batman Beyond, and Batman Streets of Gotham.   More?!?

The Flash and Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps and Superman are also scheduled to arrive Wednesday too, as well as a new Mignola/Corben Hellboy one shot!!!  This will be far better than any of the Batman books, but Hellboy already had a party.  More?!!?  Geez, I feel like Geoff Tate from Queensryche here.  (Sorry, that was REALLY obscure.)

I’ll have giveaways and door prizes from DC Comics, Batman related drink specials, discounts, costumes and a special coupon I can’t tell you about.  OH, and we’ll also have Free Beer for those who get there early.

As an aside to it all, The Avengers are on to issue seven.  Yeah, well, I’m sure someone cares.  Oh, that’s you, well great.  Come in during the Batman party and we’ll have some limited edition prints for you.  The only way you can get them is to buy Avengers #7 during the party.

We do these because we want to give back to you, our loyal customer and to say thank you.  If nothing else, come down, hangout and talk comics!

Geeky X-Mas 3…

December 4th, 11am to 4pm

This is our annual charity drive to raise money and support a number of good local charities.  I am but a helper to my friend Kathy Scott who puts this on every year.  Last year we shattered the old year’s total dollar and toy collection counts, we want to do the same again this year.

This is just some of the things we will have:

A Needs Drive (like we did with our X-mas in July event) for Animal Life Line of Iowa, the no kill animal rehabilitation shelter here on the South Side.

The Geek Boutique to raise money for Iowa Public Television.

The shop will become a Toys for Tots drop off site for several weeks.  Have unwrapped toys for needy kids, bring them in and we will get them to the Marines.

Gift Baskets for those to give to win.  You donate, you get a ticket.  We draw your ticket, you win the basket.  These are always some very nice winnings that can be turned straight into gifts… or enjoyed on their own.

This saves me every year.

Appearances by the 501st and Spider-man, plus some kids crafts, Santa, story time, drink specials and who knows what else.

Why do we not do Zombiefest anymore?  Come down and give something and you’ll see why.

X-Mas Wrapping Benefit Day…

December 18, most of the morning and afternoon.

One week before X-mas, a special day of holiday cheer and gift wrapping all for free will donations to Animal Life Line of Iowa.  Tia is already declaring it a hum-bug free zone that day… I’m not sure how I will be able to enter the shop.

3X Holiday Havoc Pre-Party…

December 1st, 6:00 to 8:00pm

Join us for wrestling shenanigans and  comic madness!

We’ll have Free Beer, Drink Specials and Door Prizes.  Several of the stars of 3XW will be on hand for you to meet and greet and it provides a great opportunity for you to pick up last minute pre-sale discounted tickets.

I also have it on good authority that the Outside the Ring crew will be there and where they go, chaos follows!

Now, on to the ranting I promised.

Stupid Straczynski…

There is no man currently working in comics I dislike more than J. Michael Straczynski right now.

This is hard to say, because A. as you well know I dislike a lot about comics and B. I do feel JMS is a great writer.  His, soon to be someone else’s, Superman run has been fantastic.  Rising Stars, Thor, Midnight Nation, Brave and the Bold… all great reads.  Has the guy ever written anything that wasn’t any good?  Don’t hurt your head thinking, I can answer that, it was a rhetorical question.  Yes and I just read it.

It is called Superman Earth One (however, I am going to, for the duration of this rant refer to it as Earth Whatever.  Why, because the Superman I read each month is from Earth One.  It has been cannon and in continuity that way for many, many decades.  So DC can *&%$ off with their…. Oh, I’m sorry, getting ahead of myself.  Let me continue.)  This Ultimate Superman story is what has me so mad at him, well, that and the news that came out last week.

However, before I get to that I want to explain WHY you couldn’t buy this book in my shop when it came out a couple weeks ago.  Kyle and I had ordered a few copies, but didn’t want to over order, as we can’t return them and the Earth Whatever was a hardcover priced at $19.99.  Quite a lot of risk with not a single person having it down as an order.

Then the Warner Brothers hype machine went into full bore on the Monday before they shipped.  Yep, you saw it on the CBS nightly news, in the New York Times, Everyone talked about it BEFORE it came out.  AND then came the orders… on Tuesday… however, I couldn’t get anymore because they were already sold out at my distributor, Diamond, before they even arrived at my shop.  Re-orders impossible.  OH, but they weren’t sold out at the big giant corporate box bookstores, the same bookstores that can return the copies they don’t sell.

That is the crap you have to deal with when you own a small business.  I get it and I’m angry about it, don’t have to like it, but can deal with it.  What I don’t have to like is the story.

I hated it, but if you know me, you were pretty sure that would be my response.  I DO NOT NEED AN ULTIMATE VERSION OF SUPERMAN!!  I do not need a re-do of Clark’s coming to Metropolis, I do not need any kind of an alteration to Superman’s origin story, I do not need him fighting Marilyn Manson (that is who it looked like to me), I do not need revision – oh, what?  This is the screenplay for a future movie version restart of the Superman franchise?  Well, Duh, I got that when I saw Clark Kent was early 20-something.  The only thing missing on the cover image is him listening to an I-pod.

Let me put it this way.  Superman inspires me.  I see him in the regular comic and I want to be a better person.  He is merely the latest solar deity, but he is the best.  The Superman in Earth Whatever did not inspire me one bit, none at all.

To be fair, the dialogue is fine and the art is actually pretty darn good (the invading aliens look dumb, but that probably isn’t all the artists fault.)  If you don’t read Superman or don’t like the Superman comics, kind of just, sort-of, like the idea of Superman, but don’t read or enjoy him… this is for you.  You will LOVE IT.  Kind of like that Joker graphic novel Brian Azzarello a few years ago (right after the movie.)  No comic continuity or history or love, just a crappy story about a Joker I’ve never seen before.  (Yep, HATED that pile too.)

Eric, The customer who lent Earth Whatever to me, liked it a lot.  I’m not sure of his love of Superman and he didn’t expound onto me why he liked the graphic novel.  I am a HUGE Superman fan and yes, I’m sure that clouds my judgment.  Personally, the same day Earth Whatever came out, so did an Absolute collection of Grant Morrison’s All Star Superman came out too.  This, in my eyes, is Superman perfection.  Possibly some of the best comics and THE best Superman comics I’ve ever read.  I’m not going to drive you off that cliff, but if you are considering one or the other, do yourself a favor and read the good stuff.

So, back to JMS…

It was announced last week that Straczynski would be leaving the two books he is currently writing to work EXCLUSIVELY on graphic novels.  “WHAT?!!?” I exclaimed as I spat my coffee into the receiver of my phone as Kyle relayed the information.  Yes, JMS is obviously too good for comics and is now moving on to just work on GN scripting.

He says it is so he can tell better stories, I say he is lazy.  He says he is taking a huge pay cut, I say there are back ends built in to it that will yield MUCH more than a single paycheck after just one of these is turned into a movie.

I say good thing he started HUGE storylines in both Wonder Woman (which we know will be written by Iowa boy Phil Hester) and Superman, which has been hit with some major delays of late.  Thanks buddy, this proves we don’t need you anyway.  Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

However, the move has more to it than just the one writer, but let’s look at it a little more rationally anyway.

I can read this in a couple ways.  JMS is a talented writer, but has been slow and delayed nearly every single project he has ever worked on (think about it for a second…. Do you remember the Twelve?  It still isn’t finished)  So, moving him to a type of comic writing with deadlines which are a little more, fluid, makes sense.  Remember when they announced that the Earth Whatever was coming out?  It was some time ago, like summer of ’09.  That is the good side to it, here is the bad.  (call it paranoia or call it the greed of giant corporations….)

Many have theorized that graphic novel publishing is a natural next step in comics.  The French publish a great deal of comics much like Earth Whatever was.  This was very successful for DC, this could signal the next step in converting more to this form, especially if it makes it easier for them to make them into movies, cartoons, videogames or whatever AND sell the original material.

Then there is the personal side.  It could be the next foray into getting rid of the direct market in comics.  If you can sell direct to the bookstore and bypass those pesky little shops, well, wouldn’t you rather deal with one or two giants, with easier distribution, smaller discounts and less obnoxious people like me?

Right now these are just concerns, but they are pretty hefty ones not just myself are bringing up.

So that is that.  Yep, I’m a glass is half empty kind of person, but I really, really want someone to come fill it… oh, hell, I’m just going to go fill it up myself.

Week of November 8th

Over the next month and a half we have a bunch of events and special days happening at the shop.

Welcome Back, Batman.

November 17th 5 to 8:00

Grant Morrison’s run on Batman is only just beginning, but before we can get to that we need to welcome him back from the dead.

This summer when we had our Superman birthday party we were asked “when are you having a Batman party?”  I responded that he was dead, you would have to wait for him to return.”  Now you get your party.

On the 17th, there are a slew of Batman books coming out.  The two biggest are Batman, the Return one shot (this is Batman’s actual return to the DC universe) and the new ongoing Batman, Inc (which will be Grant Morrison’s next take on Batman – I’ll have more on this later in the post.)  Also shipping that day are Batman #704, Batman Beyond, Batman Streets of Gotham, and Batman Odyssey (not to mention Flash and Green Lantern are also both scheduled to arrive that day too, as well as a new Mignola/Corben Hellboy one shot!!! – Far better than any Batman comic.)

Giveaways and Door prizes from DC Comics, Batman related drink specials, discounts, costumes and a special coupon I can’t tell you about.  We’ll also have Free Beer for those who get there early.

If nothing else, come down, hangout and talk comics!

3XWrestling’s Holiday Havoc Pre-Party

December 1st, 6 to 8:00

We’ll have Free Beer, Drink Specials and Door Prizes.  Several of the stars of 3XW will be on hand for you to meet and greet and it provides a great opportunity for you to pick up last minute pre-sale discounted tickets.

Geeky Christmas Live in 3D

This saves me every year.

Appearances by the 501st and Spider-man, plus some kids crafts, Santa, story time, drink specials and who knows what else.

Additional Gift Wrapping Day…

December 18th, most of the morning and afternoon.

One week before X-mas, a special day of holiday cheer and gift wrapping all for free will donations to Animal Life Line of Iowa.

Hopefully, Superman in Central Iowa…

AND, we hope to have Superman coming to Iowa in Superman #706.  No official release day is set on this, but it should happen sometime in December.  I’ve been keeping in touch with DC on this and want to really blow the roof off this.

It is not every day the first and the greatest superhero comes to your home town and that will be taking place come December.  Read him or not, enjoy the character or, well, maybe you like the inferior Batman (that’s for you Ronnie and Jimmy) this is still a pretty big deal.

I will have a lot more on this as we get closer to the mid way point in December.

Batman and Awesome #16…

I kid when I talk about not liking Batman.  I’ve been reading Batman, non-stop for longer than any character.  He almost always has one book that is top notch.  Granted when one is really good the others suck, so, you always have at least one really good bat-book.  I think we have just seen the best.

Batman and Robin #16, and this entire run has been something very special most characters only wish they could have and we aren’t even done yet.  Ronnie has his review of the issue and I’ll let him go to town, but for me, what sounds so very interesting is what is to come.

Batman, Inc is going to be great.  In an interview I read last week on Wired.com Morrison talks about his intentions with Inc.  He references the Joe Casey restart on Wildcats from a few years back and that is what made me sit up and take notice.  If you’ve read this, you know what I’m talking about, the idea of a benevolent corporation – or the impossibility of such a thing.  Great and different ideas, love him or hate him, Grant Morrison DOES NOT just write the same old sh&t.

Ronnie’s Reviews…

Batman and Robin #16 Grant Morrison & Cameron Stewart/Chris Burnham/Frazer Irving
Awesome.  Really, Really Awesome.  The issue many of us have been waiting for.  Even Matt! (Admit it you old grump) This issue wraps up Grant Morrison’s run that began with the explosive #1, which is another chapter of his years long Batman saga.
Yes, I do believe it has earned Saga status.
Reviewing this issue without spoilers is gonna be hard, so let’s just say Grant has found a way to tidy up his entire multiple title run, surpass the hype, and have an ending that effectively added a whole new original dynamic to the 70 year old character.
The story finally reveals the truth about Dr. Hurt, which makes a fine 90’s Peter Milligan story relevant.  We also get a finale and explanation to whatever it was Pyg was rambling about for so long, and get a good look at The Joker’s motivations for his really out of character behavior. I still don’t get the dominoes, though.   It also shows Bruce’s first interaction with Damien as Robin, which was priceless.  This interaction and the one following also show the new Robin’s growth as a character, which has been darker, more fun, and funnier than any in recent memory.  Especially for a Boy Wonder.  OH, and Commissioner Gordon in a tutu!
The art was split up between 3 very different artists, which gave it a kind of hodgepodge feel.  (Why is this happening so much lately?) Frazer Irving has earned a lot of respect from me for his beautifully dark imagery, especially of the Joker.  I’m not huge on Stewart, as his people are a bit child-like to me, but it doesn’t distract me enough to take from the story.  Burnham does a good impression of a cleaner Quietly, but he of course is not him.  The three artists mixed together feels off centered, but not too jarring. I wish Irving would have done the whole issue like the previous two, but I will take what I can get, the writing more than makes up for it.
The last few pages made me feel as excited as an 8 year old, something a superhero comic hasn’t done to me in way too long.  (Editor’s Note – Maybe since he was 8?)  This series was full of moments that almost reached that, that feeling that something really cool was happening in front of you.  I really can’t recommend this series enough.  There are currently two hard cover collections out, and then only 5 issues after that, which will make this really easy to catch up on.
I hope Grant Morrison hasn’t raised the Batman bar too high.
This issue – 5 Stars.  Series as a whole – 5 Stars.

(Editor’s Note – Ronnie raises one very important question, why do we not know why these books are late?  These debacles in scheduling, editing, writing, drawing and the whole system in general do happen too much and have harmed the legacy of several great series of late.  I feel there needs to be more transparency in this and wish the companies would let us know who is messing up the works.)

Quickies:
Unknown Soldier #25 Joshua Dysart & Alberto Ponticelli
This issue marks the premature end of a great series.  How this got canceled before Jack of Fables or Greek Street is beyond me.  The last few issues attempted to give the series a credible ending and tie up a lot of the story threads that had been building brilliantly since the beginning, but sadly had to resort to a few cliché ‘end of story’ tricks that would of gotten you a C in high school.  I am honestly angry that this title was reduced to this, and hate capitalism even more now that this author will not be able to share with me what he was trying to create because of pre-sale unit numbers and profit margins.  Aargh!  Do yourself a favor and get the trades, this series was an excellent example of storytelling.
This issue- 3 Stars, Series as a whole- 5 Stars.

(Editor’s Note – …and if you don’t want to see the same thing happen to great books like Sweet Tooth, start encouraging your friends to read good Vertigo and Indy published books!!!  Speaking of Sweet Tooth…)

Sweet Tooth #15 Jeff Lemire
Another incredible issue of one of my favorite series.  This massive puzzle is starting to become clearer, but also seems to be much bigger and more complicated than originally thought. The pacing is impeccable and the art is haunting.  Almost familiar themes, but executed masterfully.  5 Stars.

Freedom Fighters #3 Jimmy Palmiotti/Justin Gray & Travis Moore
This is an interesting series that seems to be getting the hang of things.  The first two issues were less than stellar (erratic pacing, semi racist caricatures, lack of depth), but it is picking up.  This issues gives us a ton of story through equal parts condensed dialogue and big bang fighty fighty.  The art is pretty good, with a lot of cheesecake butt shots that come with any Palmiotti/Gray (or Birds of Prey) book, and The Black Condor looks awesome.  The most interesting aspect of this series is the political point of view that would not be expected by the title and covers.  I am gonna keep an eye on it to see where it might go.  2.5 Stars.

Tia’s X (rated if we get more descriptions of Angel) Review…

Generation Hope #1 by Kieron Gillen and Salvador Espin

To say that I’m disappointed in the reveal of the X-Men’s “Five Lights” would be an understatement. Not only am I a little bummed from a costumer’s perspective, but these are the very first mutants to emerge from M-Day…writers have had more than a few years to come up with the top, most amazing characters and power ever…and one of them is a glorified dog.

The excitement I felt at the conclusion of “Second Coming” was practically tangible- the promise of five new mutants was nearly too much to handle, and I spent…practically hours…speculating on what their powers could be.

The Five Lights have been slowly introduced in stand-alone stories and snippets tacked onto other X-books, and I had been, at the least, unenthused at their back stories and powers.

This week, Generation Hope #1 came out  to introduce us to the new ‘team’, led by Hope Summers.

I’d say that Kieron Gillen did a pretty passable job with the material he was given, which isn’t exactly gold. Throughout the issue, I enjoyed the incorporation of each character’s ‘inner’ monologues featuring the fact that they are a “light”. A particular standout in that regard  is the X-Men’s new resident speedster Gabriel. His inner narration was a decidedly clever bit of writing incorporating “light” and providing the most cohesive look into what this character’s personality is, and will be.

The issue opens in Tokyo, (SPOILER ALERT – DO NOT READ FURTHER, YOU ARE WARNED) Japan where we meet the Fifth Light. An artist named Kenji Uedo is introduced in an awfully creepy way (though, after reading “Crossed”, very little makes me uncomfortable), as his powers seem to manifest as some type of…tentacle creature?

(Editor’s Note – It is Tetsuo from Akira – but Tia is too young to remember this animated film/Manga/Marvel Epic line adaptation.  It is a blatant rip off, see below for a link to pictures showing just how blatant.)

Currently en route to find Kenji are the other four Lights and Hope Summers. The first narration is given to Idie Okonkwo, a mutant from Nigera who apparently has the power to produce both ice and fire. In my personal opinion, that power would be pretty cool if Idie wasn’t quite so whiney. If you followed her backstory, Idie was raised very religious and when she manifested, it was believed she was  a ‘monster’ (a belief she still carries with her.

Generation Hope, babysat by Rogue, approaches Tokyo where Kenji’s tentacles have completely overtaken his building and spilt into the street. During their landing, we get the second Light-Laurie’s narration. Apparently her skin is ‘shifting crystal’, but all I’ve seen from this Canadian mutant is the ability to fly…which seems to be completely unrelated to crystal skin. Also – she looks like Mystique. And Mercury. An obvious stroke of character design “genius” by the X-artists over at Marvel. This character is very boring as well, but again, the writing in her bit of inner-narration is clever and relevant. Nonetheless, the team is forced into action as Kenji’s tentacles attack the Blackbird!

Now, I’m still struggling to understand the character of Teon. To me, he seems to be some obedient, feral dog/child…as if he was just raised in the forest by wolves, and not actually a mutant. Earlier on, it’s speculated that he rubs himself against things inappropriately, and frequently urinates on things. I’m not really sure that his attributes constitute a mutant power by any stretch, but since this is pretty much our introduction to him, I’ll keep an open mind, and hope the writers will somehow manage to make him relevant to mutants.

As the team makes a hasty retreat from action, we are introduced to Gabriel, the witty speedster. As I said previously, his personal narration is likely the most enjoyable piece of the issue for me – but it’s widely known that I like my X-Men to be funny. Thanks to those couple pages…it looks like I’ve got a nice new mutant crush. There’s a brief scuffle between Rogue and Hope, as Hope needs to remind Rogue that she’s not actually a ‘kid’ and that the current situation is ‘kindergarten compared to where I grew up”. Hope then commands her (apparent) pet, Teon, to detain Rogue so she can go and…touch…Kenji. I’m not really a subscriber to Hope’s ‘ability’ to touch, and jumpstart the Light’s powers, and in this situation, she’s eluded briefly, so she’s forced to enter the building and confront Kenji personally.  Kenji’s narration is a bit confusing to me, as he constantly refers to himself as ‘art’ and ‘ideas’…but he’s mostly just tentacles. The only conclusion I can draw is that he has the ability to make his flesh into any design he can imagine, and as he uncloaks and reveals his form to Hope, it’s fairly obvious he’s got a sick imagination. There’s a brief, disgusting attack on Hope (or is it Kenada), then a huge freaking explosion (the first ten seconds of Akira the movie or pages two through five of issue one), with Kenji as ground zero. I also don’t really understand that.  (go rent the movie Tia!!)

Obviously, I’m not completely on board with Generation Hope, and I have a boatload of apprehensions, but this IS only the first issue, and there is plenty to be revealed. My only wish is that they don’t make the entire series all action. I’d like to see it go the way of New X-Men: Academy X, and have some character interaction driven shorelines.

I did, however, really like Salvador Espin’s artwork in the issue. It was clear, and I was able to follow the action easily.

Overall, Generation Hope #1 was a fine, entertaining read, but it leaves a lot of gaps in the story and character development that will hopefully be rectified in future issues.

X-Men vs. Akira…

So, what was I blathering on about above? check out the post on Bleeding Cool.com about the swiping/blatant ripping off/stealing from the Manga/Anime Akira.  It is so apparent I truly hope someone gets their asses sued.  You would have thought Greg Land had done the whole book not just the variant cover.

Week of November 1st

3XWrestling Pre-Party This Wednesday…

This Wednesday, November 3rd we are inviting the stars of 3XWrestling to Cup o’ Kryptonite for a November Knockout pre-party.  Festivities start at 6:00 and go until 8:00.  We will have free beer for those who arrive early!

We are starting this as a regular Pre-Event hangout for both the members of the 3X family as well as you their hopeful fans.  You can mark down the next event, which will be December 1st, same bat-time.

So that is the What and When, here is the Why… On Friday, November Knockout takes place at the Des Moines Social Club at 7:30.  Presale tickets can be acquired at the shop for $12.00 adult and $6.00 kids.  You have no doubt noticed my love of pro-wrestling.  There is an old school infatuation with the sport I hold from the days I used to watch Saturday mornings with my now deceased Grandfather.  The members of 3X do as good a job as anyone currently performing on the biggest stages of TNA or WWE, but with far less of the stupid that both of their shows put out each week.  If you have gone to a 3X event, you know what I’m talking about.

If you haven’t been, I’m personally inviting you to join me this coming Friday.  I attend with my friend Eric and his daughter Katie.  I enjoyed drinking and having a good time at the events before Eric started coming, but now that the youngster is cheering “properly” and against her dad, it makes the experience SO much better.  Pro-wrestling is for kids… of all ages.

Here is the card for Friday (with a few comments):

  • The 3XW Pure Wrestling Championship is on the line

o   “The Rockstar” Jimmy Rockwell vs. “The Laotian Sensation” Rick Kwong (C)

o   Should be a really good bout.  Both performers have been fueding hard since Kwong questionably took the title from Rockwell a few months back.

  • Major Tag Team bout.

o   The High Flyers – Thompson and Sydal vs. American Ground & Air – Sailer and Bash

o   This will be the fastest and most furious the matches get on Friday.  Winner will more than likely get a championship opportunity in the near future.

  • Pick Your Opponent Match

o   Mark Sterling vs. “The Rebel” Jeremy Wyatt

o   This feud will not die and will, I’m sure, only get worse this week.

  • 8 Man Tag Team Elimination Match

o   3XW Heavyweight Champ Rory Fox, Sir Bradley Charles, and the Horn Dogs Maddog McDowell and Krotch vs. The Gentlemen’s Club – Brian Ash, Gage Octane and the 3XW Tag Champs “Delicious” Devin Carter & Casanova

o   There will be pure chaos as Commissioner Countrymen will be at ringside for a referee’s nightmare.  You also, just have to love an Elimination match.  Remember when WWF’s Survivor Series was all elimination matches?  Long ago, yes, but those were great.  This is going to be like those old days.

Welcome Back Batman, November 17…

The date is set, Batman’s return is emanate (so emanate we have already seen him in the Road Home series) and we are going to welcome him back with a party on November 17th.  We are going to have prizes, discounts, coupons, giveaways and beer.  So, mark it on your calendar.

Why have this party?  I don’t know why, Superman is SO much better then Batman, but everyone whined and cried during the summer when we had our Superman Birthday Party, “when are you having a Batman party?”

I, personally, think Dick Grayson is a far better Batman then Bruce Wayne, but some of you might differ (you are wrong, but you might differ in opinion.)  Trying to make the customers happy, we had to wait until the original was back… well, now you have your Batman party, stop crying.

Side Note — Due to DC’s overall Batman lateness there are a slew of Bat-books coming out on that date too.  Of the books I know about right now Batman #704, Batman, Inc. #1, Batman The Return one shot, Streets of Gotham #17, Batman Beyond and Batman Odyssey all come out that day.  Flash and Green Lantern also look to be arriving on that third week of November.  However, that could all change at any moment with someone not getting their work done.  So, stay tuned.

Marvel’s Point One Issues…

I found a potentially interesting, yet confusing tag in a Bleeding Cool post and went to Marvel to investigate.  It appears that Marvel will have point one (like .1 or #500.1) issues in February.  You can read the poorly worded “press” release on their website.

It appears that, starting in February, there will be issues in addition to the regular series that will give origins as well as set up storylines for the next year, creating great jumping on points for new readers.  All of the issues will be priced at $2.99 as well.  Over three months, eleven comics will get this treatment.

This is a pretty good idea, but from a company that already makes their books pretty accessible.  On most Marvel books there exists a “Previously in” page that gives a pretty good synopsis of the goings on in their books.  I don’t really know that the point one issues are needed, but I applaud Marvel’s effort… even if it sounds a lot like their Half issues from the late nineties or DC’s Zero issues from the early nineties.  (Do these even count as full numbered issues when they RE-re-number a book?  Sorry, I really hate that jumping ahead numbering.)

I was asked this weekend about some good books to try as some of his were being cancelled, delayed or whatever.  I had some recommendations and tried to give books with new plots or easy jump on points, but I guess I’m wondering if people still find it hard to get into the average superhero book?  Vertigo and some of the really good indy books can be damn near impossible, but do people find an on-going series difficult to jump into?

I already stated Marvel’s superheroes are pretty easy.  Now, DC on the other hand, damn near goes out of its way to try and discourage you from knowing what is going on.  Their characters are probably easier to “get,” but some of the plot lines you need a chalk board and a slide rule to follow.  I can barely follow all the intricateness of Morrison’s multi-layered, multi-book stuff or Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern stuff, which has had SO many dangling plot lines and characters over the two years plus of rainbow lanterns I don’t know if you can just “jump in.”   Every issue could be somebody’s first issue, but they aren’t written that way and to some extent that is a good thing.  Makes for somewhat better overall storytelling.  However, on the other hand, could DC try, just a little harder to make it easier to jump on?

That wasted last page is what I’m getting at.  That stupid DC Nation thing started by the ex-editor and chief Dan Diddio.  The three small paragraphs and a picture of stuff that had been on line three weeks ago is less then worthless!  How much better served would we be with a cover of the next issue or a letter column?  How much better would it be to follow the story, I can’t always remember what was going on in the issue before, if there was a “previously in” page to start each book?

DC has a lot going well right now, but they need to stay with the thoughts of “what is best for the reader” not what is best for DC online.  In comics it is very easy to lose momentum.

As a side note to this — several higher ranking DC editors and staff were point blank asked at C2E2 about this worthless wasted page and they said they Were trying to start a community with it.  Trying to drive people to their online pages and make a community.  If that sounds as dumb to you as it does to me… yeah, our comics are in the hands of idiots.

Ronnie’s Reviews…

Sorry no longer reviews this week, I had a lot of Halloween and Dio De Muertes to be doing.
Incognito: Bad Influences #1 Ed Brubaker & Sean Philips
This is the second mini of the Incognito series, the first being one of my favorites from last year.  It starts right where the first volume ended, then kicks it into high gear, justifying a new series.  There appears to be a lot more story to tell here, and I am excited to read it.  Plus the History of Pulp texts are back.  And no ads!  4 Stars
(Editor’s Note – We have the Trade of the first series in stock.  If you are looking for something new and different, give this a try.  This is as good as modern comics gets and Ronnie’s stars of four is low for such a good read.)
Detective Comics #870 David Hine & Scott McDaniel
The grand finale of ‘The Imposters’ arc.  The first issue frustrated me, but it got much better with each following, and ended very well.  Still not sure who was behind the mask, and the Heath Ledger homage got a little old, but overall a fun read. 3.5 Stars

Scalped #42 Jason Aaron & R.M. Guera
Finishes up the ‘Unwanted’ storyline brutally.  Carol & Dash finally (almost) talk, and the things left unsaid inform the toughest of choices.  Ends on a rare glimmer of hope, and sets up for another interesting story.  Still the best damn comic out there.  5 Stars.

Walking Dead Episode #1
Better than the comic.  Seriously.  And I hate tv.  I am real excited to see where this will go.  4 Stars.
(Editor’s Note – Frank Darabont improved on this series.  I didn’t think he would be able to, but he did.  The muted colors and very, very edgy scenes were on par with any made for TV/Cable show I’ve ever seen.  Fantastic scary moments, without the typical modern stylings of modern horror.  It is better than the comic – by far.)
Hellblazer: City of Demons #2 Si Spencer & Sean Murphy
This second issue ups the ante considerably.  This, along with Vertigo Resurrected: Shoot, are my introduction to John Constatine, and I am becoming a big fan.  4 Stars.
